COSMOPOLITAN LONDON

Shopping / Sightseeing / Dining / Afterdark
Historic, cosmopolitan London is a world in itself, with so many fascinating sights that even residents don't get to see them all.
< Shopping >
Shopping in Oxford Street and Regent Street is virtually compulsory for every visitor. Food-lovers should not miss the Harrod's Food Hall. But to experience traditional London life, head for one of the markets. The huge Camden Market get packed at weekends. Portobello Market, a major tourist attraction thanks to the film Notting Hill, is best seen on a Saturday morning. Brick Lane Market in the East End is a taste of 'Cockney London' on Sunday morning. Whichever market you choose, don't forget to haggle over prices!
< Sightseeing >
Taxis are expensive so you'll need to make maximum use of the underground train system to get around. Most important sights, theatres and attractions are along the Circle Line - from the trendy West End to Soho, Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square and Regent Street. Tours aboard open-topped buses are also good for sightseeing major attractions.

For a birds-eye view of what the excitement is all about, the most popular attraction in town is the London Eye, otherwise known as the Millennium Wheel. For culture, the National Gallery has one of the world's most impressive art collections and entry is free. Tate Modern houses international modern art, and the building, a former power station, is as exciting as the art.

The British Museum is the oldest and biggest museum in the world - but don't exhaust yourself trying to see it all. London Zoo also requires sensible walking shoes or trainers. Madame Tussaud's has to be seen once. History is everywhere, from the Tower of London to Westminster Abbey, one of the most visited churches in the world, and Buckingham Palace, which is open to the public.
< Dining >
For dining out, you're spoilt for choice, but two British institutions should be on every visitor's itinerary: a typical fish and chip shop, like the famous Sea Shell in Marylebone, and afternoon tea at The Ritz.
< Afterdark >
After dark, don't miss some of the most historic pubs in the world. The Lamb and Flag in Covent Garden dates back to 1623 and is one of the last wooden-framed buildings in London; at Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese and the Jamaica Wine House, you'll be drinking at the same bar as Dickens, Thackeray and Johnson.
